The Oakland Police Department began the process of encrypting all their radio channels on April 21, 2025, with the reprogramming of handheld and in-car radios. The transition to fully encrypted channels is scheduled to be completed sometime in late summer or early fall 2025, likely between August and October.

California Senatror Josh Becker of District 13 wrote a bill in 2021-2022. SB-1000 Law enforcement agencies: radio communications.

Although it had cleared the State Senate that May. It was eventually was put on on hold by the Assembly Appropriations Committee and hasn't advanced any further.

Becker, said in an interview after the vote that he plans to bring the bill back the next year.
