☆ DETAILED INFORMATION BELOW ☆
WISCOM INFORMATION
You may at times hear transmissions from outside of Clark, Marathon, Portage, and/or Wood Counties. This, as some of the regional talkgroups on the WISCOM-P25 system cover large areas. Examples of this would be on the Wisconsin State Patrol channels, as the Wausau Post handles a large area which includes Marathon, Portage, and Wood Counties (plus others) and/or the Eau Claire Post that also handles a large area, which includes Clark County (plus others).
STATE PATROL INFORMATION
Unless there is a large-scale incident ongoing, you will not hear much traffic on WISCOM as most of the channels used in this area are for mutual-aid purposes only. However, you will commonly hear Wisconsin State Patrol (WSP) (Wausau and/or Eau Claire Post(s)) as they are regular “daily” users of the system.
Having said, WSP units commonly switch back/forth between using WISCOM and communicating directly with county dispatchers on their own channels. When WSP uses WISCOM, they are communicating directly with their own State Patrol dispatcher at their assigned post. This is often to relay information already given to the county dispatch for the area where the incident is, or sometimes to report a new incident as well.
When WSP reports a new incident to their own dispatchers, WSP dispatch then relays that information to the county in question if additional resources are needed. Further, WSP Troopers often “Self-dispatch” themselves to calls - meaning, they are constantly monitoring multiple radio channels in the areas where they patrol, and if they hear a significant call dispatched on a county channel in their area, they will then start heading to that call, and inform the WSP dispatcher at their assigned post that they are responding to said incident. They then contact the applicable county law enforcement dispatch on the appropriate channel to report the same.
In reverse, county dispatchers will also sometimes directly request State Patrol to a scene - usually accident calls - in which case they will call WSP dispatchers and ask for the Trooper to be sent.
In summary, county dispatchers rarely monitor WSP channels (and in some cases, may not even have the correct digital radio equipment to do so) however WSP dispatchers/troopers almost always monitor the applicable county dispatch channels 24/7.
WSP CHANNEL IDENTIFIERS ON WISCOM
This scanner is programmed to transmit metadata. On some platforms while listening to the scanner online, it will tell you what the scanner is doing, ie. “Scanning”, or, when locked onto a channel, it will say the channel’s name. All conventional radio frequencies (County Dispatch Channels) are listed in plain language (ie. “Wood County Fire Dispatch”, etc.) Channels on the WISCOM system, however, such as State Patrol channels, are coded per the WISCOM digital system.
Below are the WSP codes for your reference, so you know what channel you are hearing:
“WSPNC1” = Wisconsin State Patrol Northcentral Region (Wausau) Channel 1
“WSPNW1” = Wisconsin State Patrol Northwest Region (Eau Claire/Spooner) Channel 1
WSP UNIT IDENTIFIERS
Statewide WSP unit identifiers are based on the location/post of the assigned Trooper. A full list can be found online from the Wisconsin State Patrol website. For the purposes of this scanner feed, listed below are the common WSP unit identifiers you will hear on the WISCOM talkgroups programmed into the unit.
Northcentral - Wausau Post: 400-499
Northwest - Eau Claire Post: 600-699
Northwest - Spooner Post: 700-799
OTHER STATE AGENCY UNIT IDENTIFIERS ON WISCOM
During large scale incidents - take, for example, a large wildland fire - mutual-aid units will typically speak in plain language to ensure that all listening persons can understand who they are, and what they are doing. Outside of large scale incidents, the following occasional users may be heard on WISCOM with the identifiers listed below:
Cxxx - DNR Conservation Wardens (likely heard on a. “DNRLEATG” or b. “DNRWARDEN” or c. “DNRLAW” = a. All Law Enforcement Announcement channel and/or b. Credentialed Statewide channel and/or c. Department Common channel)
Rxxx - DNR Park Rangers (likely heard on a. “DNRFDBRF” or b. “DNRFRWIR” = a. Forestry Black River Falls Dispatch Group channel and/or b. Forestry Wisconsin Rapids Dispatch Group channel)
Jxxx - Dept. of Justice Agents (would be heard on “DCIWAU” = Div. of Criminal Investigation-Wausau channel)
☆ Full list of all agencies and talkgroup IDs/codes programmed into this scanner see the list at the bottom of this informational page. ☆
COUNTY UNIT IDENTIFIERS
To help users better understand what they are listening to, as this scanner covers multiple counties, please see the below information which can help you identify what units you are hearing and where they may be located:
Wood County Law Enforcement
Units 100-199 = Marshfield Police Department
Units 300-399 = Any other department outside of Marshfield, Rapids or County (ie. Pittsville PD, etc.)
Units 400-499 = Wood County Sheriff’s Deputies*
*Note - in Wood County, the Sheriff’s Office unit identifiers conflict with the State Patrol unit identifiers, as the Wausau Post that covers Wood County, their Troopers are also sequenced #400-499. As such, when State Patrol communicates on a Wood County channel, they typically identify as “State” in plain language, as to not be confused with county units.
Example:
WSP: "State 419 to Wood County"
County Dispatch: "Go ahead State 419"
WSP: "County, State 419 will be en route to the call in Rudolph"
County Dispatch: "10-4"
Units 800 - 899 = Wisconsin Rapids Police Department
Wood County Fire Department(s)
Wood County Fire Department units identify themselves in plain language. For example, “Marshfield Med. 93.” As such there is no unit identifier table for Wood County Fire Departments.
