NS Frankfort 160.86 Channel 39 160.695
TP&W Channel 86
Tertiary Channels:

Rarely there is a detector heard at mp 35.7 on the Crawfordsville Sub

Amtrak's Cardinal (Train 50 eastbound and Train 51 westbound) run 1145 miles between New York Penn Station and Chicago Union Station. There is a locomotive change at Washington, DC. Between Washington and New York, Siemens electrics are generally used on the northeast corridor. Diesel locomotives are employed between Chicago and Washington DC. Variously the locomotives will be Siemens Charger or GE Genesis. Shuttle leader between Indy and Chicago can also be one of Chicago's GE Dash 8 yard switchers, such as 514 or 517.
The first or last 244 miles are on the Northeast Corridor, which is mostly owned by Amtrak. Most of the remaining mileage is CSX, except for short segments of NS in Virginia and in CN/UP/NS in the Chicago complex. In a blue moon, UP dispatcher 48 can sometimes be heard here handling the Cardinal between Thornton Junction and Dolton. The short section of CN trackage is dispatched by CSX. NS is on channel 8 and there is generally a short span where channel 20 is used. As of December 2025 we are not aware of any stream coverage of the Cardinal in the Chicago area. There may be some limited coverage in Manassas, Virginia, and possibly in the Huntington, West Virginia region.
The Cardinal is unique, in that on certain days it serves as an equipment shuttle between Chicago and Indianapolis. On those days, there are deadhead cars, usually at the front of the train, with Indianapolis locomotives leading. Generally the conductor operates the radio on the Cardinal section, so you will hear both the engineer and the conductor calling signals.
In addition to this stream, Broadcastify has good coverage of the CSX Cardinal route under its Hancock and Marion County Indiana listings. Passage through this area is normally early AM for train 51, and after midnight for train 50. Verified December 2025. Subscription is required to listen to archives if you are not up all night. The Hancock County stream is excellent, in that it has a train length detector as well as axles. This confirms the info about the Cardinal before/after it's Beech Grove component.
in addition to the Lafayette camera, there is also coverage by camera in Chicago, which shows the 51 Cardinal if it is being turned on Amtrak's western eye. There may also be some middle ofthe night camera coverage in Covington, Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati. We have not verified that possibility.
Sadly, Amtrak does not receive any financial support from the State of Indiana.
