August 6 Safety Proposal: P25 digital mode helps to eliminate noise and static and fading therefore providing a much cleaner clearer audio being easier to understand. The drawback is if you have bad digital signal, you don't get anything. Bad analog signal, you can still listen and make out words. Kind of like Analog TV vs Digital TV, even distant stations can be viewed, even with static, but distant digital signals get all blocky and choppy, and then just drop off entirely. In densely populated environment, (large Citys) have an infrastructure already built with a digital backbone to interconnect each broadcast location. Hillsdale county does not have that vital backbone interconnecting the towers. Let alone enough towers to cover the county completely with this newer frequency. One of the key benefits of P25 Digital Radio over analog radio is the ability to securely encrypt calls without impacting the coverage area.
My opinion: The new P25 system would be nice change as the current system is outdated. BUT with encryption, that no longer gives transparency into the Public Radio frequency. Only bits and pieces of Unencrypted data can be received. The county decides on what channels to encrypt. I cannot "Legally" broadcast the encrypted feed. As for the current infrastructure towers and radios, they all need to be updated and maintained. This all requires more money from the Taxpayers.
TL;DR I will be voting no on this proposal. Government transparency and the Tax burden.
Waiting on Hillsdale County to eventually move over to the P25 Digital. Ready to deploy once they switch over.
