Fire Department
KAR-981 FM 154.44500 100.0 PL
The Lawrence Fire Department's Fire Alarm Division is equipped with a "Class A System" with two operators on duty at all times. The "Class A System" consist of a dictaphone, alarm transmitter, and a base radio. The system operates on the UHF Frequency of 154.445 megahertz with a Call Sign of KAR-981. All Fire Alarm Operations are under the direction of the Superintendent of Fire Alarm. Fire Alarm is currently staffed with two fire fighters and six civilian dispatchers. Fire Alarm operates with the use of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) while dispatching apparatus to incidents throughout the City of Lawrence. The personnel in this office are responsible for receiving and processing all alarms and requests for assistance from the public, for dispatching the proper number and types of fire suppression personnel and apparatus to the scenes of emergency incidents, for supporting the field units in their operations, and for providing proper coverage of resources in the city for additional incidents.
LAWRENCE CONTROL: The Lawrence Control Fire Mutual Aid Radio Coordination Program is run from the Fire Alarm Office of Lawrence Fire Department. This program provides for supplementary dispatch assistance for neighboring communities suffering a major fire or emergency incident or multiple incidents which strain the local resources and require resources from other near-by communities. The assistance provided by the Lawrence Control Dispatchers frees the local fire community's dispatchers from a large portion of the mutual aid radio traffic, and allows them to focus on supporting the local incident(s). The program uses 10 Alarm Running Cards to enable the efficient and orderly movement of emergency resources both to support the incident(s) in progress and to stand by for additional incidents.
