Feed Notes

This feed has always been provided for the benefit of the general community, not the benefit of criminals trying to avoid police.  I have no direct evidence that the feed has assisted criminals to evade capture, but providing a live feed for the benefit of anyone with a smart phone also introduces a moral delema for it can be utilised for the wrong reasons.  It is true that anyone can buy their own scanner and listen to police, fire services etc., but the live online feed is much easier to access in the field, and doesn't require a separate scanner.   The counter-argument is that an online feed provides quicker information for the general community to possibly assist with general policing, and help promote crime prevention and crime reporting.  It also shows a human element to policing activities rather than police being portrayed as rigid enforcement.

Brisbane metro police use a different radio system (P25) which is digitally encrypted and not available to the public.  In the next few years, it is generally accepted that the remaining emergency services systems will also be converted to a P25 system and henceforth not available online.  The 'Government Digital Wireless Network' project is currently being undertaken for the entire state of Queensland and the main obectives is to "deliver enhanced digital radio voice and narrowband data communications for Queensland's public safety agencies, with improved communications security, interoperability between public safety agencies".  The priority is to support the G20 meetings in Cairns and Brisbane in 2014, and to support SE QLD by 2016.  This feed will not be availale after the GDWN is operational as it utilises encrypted (secure) communications.

The Police Commuications Centre (PCC) for the Moreton Region is located in Maroochydore, approximately an hour north of the Moreton Region on the Sunshine Coast. The same VKR operators will often be found handling QPS Sunshine Coast communications on alternate shifts as the PCC handles both Sunshine Coast and Moreton communications.  Main Roads QLD is located in the same building and this enables QPS operators to monitor all of the Main Roads Traffic Cameras, and provide a coordinated response to any traffic incidents.
