Feed Notes

This streaming feed will monitor Norfolk Southern rail dispatch, milepost annunciation, engine cab crew, repair crew, and yard transmissions in the Northern Westmoreland, Southern Butler, and Western Armstrong County areas in Pennsylvania, mainly between the cities of Harmar Township (MP 66.8) and Apollo (MP 36.5), PA.  On good days, communications from the Pittsburgh Main Line (MP 304.4, Hillside, to MP 316.7 Donohoe) may also be heard for railfanning around Latrobe, PA.   Incoming frequencies are captured using a home-built, custom DB4 antenna with a +20 dB boost into a Radio Shack Pro-197 Digital Trunking scanner fitted with an audio ground loop isolator.  An FM trap and several ferrites are also installed at points in the system.  The scanner was programmed using ARC500 software, and the stream is controlled by ScannerCast RR edition.  Note:  Some two way communication is limited/squelchy due to terrain effects, but the feed is quite suitable for railfanning at a safe and legal distance.  Please ensure you observe the property rights of Norfolk Southern while enjoying the stream to watch trains.

Addtional Note:  There is also occasional interference during the evening hours which may lessen the listening experience.  However, rail communications will "break over" the squelch.  This is a known issue where work to remediate continues.
