Red Deer City RCMP
|Red Deer City RCMP||Public Safety
The city of Red Deer has a population of 90,000 people. The city of Red Deer contracts the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) to be their municipal police force. The RCMP is Canada's national police force. Although it is a Federal police force (like the FBI) it also contracts itself to most of the Canadian Provinces to be their Provincial police force (like state troopers) and in addition they also contract themselves out to cities and towns to be their police force aswell, as is the case in Red Deer. This makes the RCMP unique in that it serves on all three levels, Federal, Provincial and Municipal. Members of the RCMP are recruited from all across the country of Canada. They all train at one central academy located in Regina Saskatchewan. They live and train on base full time for six months. If they pass all the exams and graduate they are told where they will be posted with very limited say in where they go, they can be posted anywhere in the Country. This means that all most all of the police officers in Red Deer are not from the Red Deer area and many are from completely seperate Provinces.
The Red Deer RCMP have two detachments. Their main detachment is in the downtown area and is quite large and houses approximatley 120 staff. They also operate a much smaller detachment in the north end of the city where approximatley 30 people work.
They have four watches, each consisting of approximatley 18 front line police officers. In addition they also have many support sections such as the police dog section, traffic, transit enforcement, by law, CSI teams ... etc.
The area directly outside and around the city is policed by the Blackfalds RCMP detachment which is based 10 Kilometers north of Red Deer and is a completley seperate police detachment.
